Clowns at Ranga Shangkara! (A Movement Story)

during the Inauguration on 21 July 2012

Believe it or not.... Based on a sample of a movement story given on the first day of rehearsal, the children who had attended, gave lots of ideas and inputs, keeping in mind that ‘clown’ was sort of the main theme for AHA! International Theatre for Children Festival 12.  Based on the children’s input, I developed a story line and came up with “Clowns at Ranga Shankara”.

This was planned as a pre-show activity whereby after the AHA! Troupe first narrated the story with the movements; the children who came to watch the scheduled show had the opportunity to join the AHA! Troupe while they repeated the story.

The response was very good from all, the participants, The AHA! Trope children and narrators: Amulya, Achintya and Rahguveer helped to guide the children with their movements via their narration. The other AHA! Troupe guided them through their expressions and movement.

This event was indeed, very endearing to watch - especially the look of excitement by the children participating in it.

The AHA! Troupe members for movement story were Raghuveer, Amulya, Achintya, Shreya Yogesh, Sebastian George, Dishita Ramesh, Ananya Honnur, Sriram and Sreenidhi (who was also a Clown). It was incredible to see these young children being very committed to their roles.

Inauguration Opening Gambit on 21 July 2012
This pre-show ancillary activity was performed on 22 July 2012 @ 3:15pm & 7:00pm; also on 28 July 2012 @ 3:15pm.

I am sharing this story (an edited version). Teachers or drama instructors for toddlers or primary children can use this story as part of your class-room activity.

Clowns....
(Starts with children sleeping on the floor working in their personal space).

Once, some children woke up from their sleep yawning and stretching!
They felt something funny on their nose and realized that they had a big round red nose!
They tried to take it off, but it wouldn’t come off!
They tried so hard but it, just, wouldn’t come off!
They have become clowns!
Just then, they noticed some colourful costume and huge long-toed shoes!
The clowns were very excited and they put on the costume.
When they tried to walk with the shoes, they found it difficult. They first took some small steps but they tripped and fell. Oh, no!
Then they tried some big steps.
Yes, this was the best way to move and they walked around happily.
As they were walking around happily – suddenly their nose took charge and was leading them!

Their nose lead them first into a tunnel.
It was dark and long and smelly tunnel! Yuck!
The clowns were not happy, they were scared!
Soon they came out of the tunnel. Phew!
Their nose next lead them to a staircase.
They had to climb the staircase. It was very difficult!
Soon, they came to a space that was dark but it was big and flat.
The clowns felt relieved.

Just then, they realised that they were in front of an audience.
They looked at each other.
They discussed amongst themselves.
And they decided to give each other a hand-shake
Next they picked up some balls that were in front of them and started to juggle!
Wow! What a great act of juggling…er.. mm… maybe not so great
Ah! They got some hula hoops and did their twisting and turning!
Ops! Oh no, now they are finding it difficult to get the hula-hoops off because of their huge shoes.
Oh, there its off now and they roll the hoops to the side.

Now, what will they do next
Looks like The clowns are dancing like robots? Err… I suppose clowns could do that too!
Oh! the music got faster and the clowns are dancing to the beat
Seems like they are out of control!
Oh! Looks like they have used up all they energy

[Narrator claps] [Children sleeping]

Once, some children woke up from their sleep yawning and stretching!
They were feeling really tired and felt something funny on their nose.

Strange, they were sure that they had turned into clowns.
Then, they realized that they must have been dreaming.
Feeling tired, they gave a big, big yawn and went back to sleep.

THE END!
